Basket weaving is a 3D construction technique which allows the maker to create a three dimensional shape using just their hands and a few tools. The craft and its significance have undergone changes through time. Few people realise that all woven baskets, furniture and accessories are still made by hand, including those sold by the large retail chains. The lack of appreciation for this time consuming technique means that it is now rarely practiced in the western world. Woven objects have been used throughout the history of civilisation for every possible purpose; from the cradle to the grave. Our cultural heritage includes rich and diverse weaving techniques and the use of locally sourced materials. Baskets and the trade of the basket weaver disappeared with the introduction of artificial materials. Nevertheless the technique is still a part of our lives. Natural wicker coffins are becoming more and more popular, the Dutch riot police use wicker shields and the initiative of the Basketclub has drawn attention to the contemporary use of basketry. Basket weaving contributes to world wide cultural exchange, nature conservation, community building and much more.

HOW&WOW BASK IT! is a Crafts Council Nederland initiative and has been curated by Adrianus Kundert, designer and co-founder of Basketclub. We pool our qualities, unite makers, designers, experts and enthusiasts and research into the scope and artistic possibilities of basketry. HOW&WOW BASK IT! showcases the versatility and relevance of the craft of basket weaving.
